The other day, Amy and I took Moses to his first Yappy Hour - a fundraiser for the New Hampshire Society for the Protection of Cruelty Against Animals hosted by Smuttynose Brewery. We primarily went to support the cause (a dollar from each beer sold went to the NHSPCA) and to help Mo socialize a bit. The added benefit? Drinking great beer with fellow dog lovers!
I am always taken by how dogs can bring strangers together in almost any setting – on the street, at the park, or, in this case, at a brewery. In most social situations, it’s hard for many of us to approach a group of people we’ve never met and start talking. But, with a dog, it’s different. A dog seems to be the ultimate icebreaker!
Between doggie handshakes (aka butt sniffing) and the occasional beer spill from a pulled leash, we shared Mo’s rescue story with strangers and learned about their dogs. With the proverbial ice being broken, those stories lead to conversations about other topics – from favorite towns in the area to beach and hiking trails as well as a great brewery on Nantucket to visit with your dog.
And, Mo? He did well. He’s still learning that, generally, all people are kind. In fact, he did so well, we stopped at one of our favorite ice cream places and rewarded him with a doggie sundae!
If you are in the NH area over the summer and looking for something fun to do with your dog, here is NHSPCA's Yappy Hour schedule:
And, if you have or know of an organization that hosts it’s own form of a Yappy Hour, feel free to share the link in the comments below.
